Darrell E Corwin, Jr., formerly of Lee's Summit, MO, died March 22, 2023. He was a 1957 graduate of Southeast High School where he was an all around athlete. He was an Eagle Scout at the age of 14 and very proud of his son Chad when he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout as well.
He attended the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was offered a contract with the Cleveland Indians his freshman and sophomore years at MU but decided he was not a pro athlete and that he should get his college degrees. He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and was chosen the winner of the Paul Niewald Award as the outstanding intramural player over a four-year period. He graduated from Mizzou with his bachelors and masters degrees in physical education and health in 1962 at the age of 21.
He taught and coached four years for the North Kansas City School District. After 14 years as an asst professor, coach of basketball, baseball and golf as well as intramural director, sports information director and athletic director at UMKC he was inducted into the UMKC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015. He was also voted by his coaching peers as the head coach of the district USA All Star team in 1980, the year he retired from coaching. He is still the winningest basketball coach ever at UMKC. His favorite position was President of the District 16 Coaches.
Darrell owned and was sales manager of Custom Coaters for 7 years. For 18 years he was the Jackson County, MO Administrator of Special Recreation. Upon his retirement he was presented by the Jackson County Executive a Proclamation of the County for his accomplishments.
He retired after 33 years as the Executive Director of the Cholly Corwin Fund for Injured Youth. He was awarded the Dick Howser Courage Award in 1987. Darrell served as a deacon at the Memorial Christian Church of Kansas City as well as the Lee's Summit Christian Church. He belonged to the alumni associations of University of MO-Columbia, UMKC, Sigma Chi Fraternity, Ban Johnson Baseball League and Kansas City Rugby Football Club. He played overhand softball for 26 years, was a Class A racquetball player and an avid golfer.
Survivors include his loving wife and best friend, Mary Ann, sons Chad, Brooks (Tracy), Justin (Kip) and daughter Alicia (Pete), grandchildren, great grandchild, relatives, former players and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and loving son Mike. His motto was "Don't Quit". He will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. at the Old Swinney Gym, UMKC Recreation Center on the UMKC campus, 5030 Rockhill Road, KCMO. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas City, 3011 Baltimore Ave., Kansas City, MO 64108.
